ZIMBABWE Senior Women cricket team hosts visiting Ireland Women in the second One Day International at Harare Sports Club this morning, hoping to replicate the performance in the first ODI on Tuesday.
The Lady Chevrons playing in only their first-ever ODI since getting the ODI status from the International Cricket Council showed character in the four-wicket win.
Zimbabwe captain Mary-Anne Musonda was the star of the show with her unbeaten century, 103, as the team chased down what seemed like an insurmountable 254 runs. Precious Marange (27), Josephine Nkomo (25), Ashley Ndiraya (24), Pelagia Mujaji (16) and Modester Mupachikwa (11) all managed double figures while only the captain converted her positive start into a century.
Marange and Nkomo picked two wickets each, while the trio of Nomvelo Sibanda, Esther Mbofana and Loreen Tshuma claimed a wicket each.
Head coach Adam Chifo said the win has given them the impetus to try and make it two wins in two matches in their quest to go for the series win.
“It has indeed installed a lot of belief in the ladies, a lot of confidence going forward,” Chifo told EnterSportNews.
“Ireland have played a lot of ODI matches than us by far, and for us to pull such a performance against them says a lot about our team.”
The team will be looking to prove that their victory with as many balls to spare was not a fluke but bearing in mind that they are up against a very experienced side.
“We are looking to continue with the grinding attitude in the remaining matches, and obviously, a series win will be more than an excellent boost for the ladies,” added Chifo.
Zimbabwe lead the four-match ODI series 1 – 0, heading into the second game today.
