Zimbabwe’s Kuipers Clinches Silver at 2023 Africa Triathlon Sprint Cup

ZIMBABWE triathlete Andie Kuipers won a silver medal in the U23 Elite Women’s event at Sunday’s 2023 Africa Triathlon Sprint Cup Blue Bay Mauritius.

Kuipers finished Elite Female fifth overall after an intense swim as she kept pace with the front pack.

On Saturday, another Zimbabwean, Duwan Botha, came out of the water in ninth position and towards the end of the bike leg, he caught an athlete and formed a pack of three. He finished in 10th place at the end of the run.

The sea conditions in Mauritius were smooth, with a bit of a current. The bike and run were relatively flat, but there was quite a wind, and the conditions were hot, which made the run challenging.

Speaking to EnterSportNews, Triathlon Zimbabwe coach Pam Fulton, commenting on Botha’s performance, said: “Duwan was happy with his performance yesterday (Saturday) as he had a very steady race. He still has much work to do in the swim to come out of the water with the front pack.”

Fulton was full of praises for Kuipers and was pleased to see how her hard work is finally paying off.

“Andie was extremely pleased with her performance, coming 5th overall and taking the silver U23 medal. She has been training hard for coming out of the water with the front pack, and finally, she is there,” added Fulton.

“This has given her so much confidence, and now she plans to work hard on her run to give her a strong finish to her racing.”
