ZIMBABWE have suffered a big blow after their captain Sean Williams was ruled out of the first Test match after he failed to fully recover from a soft tissue injury to his left hand in time for the game that gets underway at Harare Sports Club this Thursday.
The injury, which had forced him to sit out the second T20I last Friday, flared up during the third game on Sunday.
In Williams absence, Brendan Taylor will be the stand-in captain for the first Test.
Williams injury comes hard on the heels of Craig Ervine’s who suffered a calf strain during the first T20I against Pakistan and Sikander Raza who recently went under the knife.
The trio’s absence robs Zimbabwe of much needed experience in their batting line up against their more fancied opponents in the first test.
However, this gives another young player a chance to prove himself against better opposition and give a hint on what life may look like once the seniors players retire from Test cricket.
