Zimbabwe Kobudo Team Bags 9 Gold Medals at the Africa Women Cup Championships

THE Zimbabwe Kobudo Team under the Zimbabwe Karate Union (ZKU) clinched a stunning 22 medals in the recent Second Annual Africa Women Cup Championship.

The shining collection comprised nine gold, nine silvers, and four bronze.

The stellar performance of the Zimbabwe team was brought to light by five fierce female participants: Tariroyashe Ndhlovu, Shamiso Makombe, Olga Zvavanjanja, Jeahan Zvavanjanja, and Thandiwe Chirindo.

On the men’s side, Vincent Fambira held the banner high.

Guiding these talents was Shidoshi-ho Wilfred Mashaya, the trailblazer for Kobudo in Zimbabwe and the sitting Vice President of the Zimbabwe Karate Union (ZKU).

Organised by Kyoshi Cindi Mailula of South Africa under the auspices of the Pan African Shotokan Karate-do Federation, this tournament was a tribute to women, celebrated in August.

Remarkably, this was Zimbabwe Kobudo Team’s maiden physical tournament. Earlier engagements had been virtual due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Previously, only one participant had attended the physical tournaments, making this a significant leap signalling growth and success in the sport within Zimbabwe.

However, challenges persist. The shadow of insufficient sponsorship looms large, a hurdle which, this time, forced more than half of the slated participants to bow out. Yet, with this astounding win, hopes are high that potential sponsors will recognise the prowess and passion of the Zimbabwean team.

Master Wilfred Mashaya expressed immense pride in the team’s performance, emphasising the honour of representing Zimbabwe. He remarked, “God is good all the time. With God, everything is possible.” Acknowledging the team’s potential, he stressed the importance of humility, focus, discipline, and hard work.

With enough support and sponsorship, they are determined to elevate Zimbabwe’s global stature.
