Lady Chevrons set for another spin examination by Thailand

ZIMBABWE women’s cricket team looks to make it two wins on the trot when they entertain the visiting Thailand side in the second unofficial One Day International match at Takashinga Cricket Club in Highfield, Harare on Friday.

The match takes place 24 hours after ICC confirmed Zimbabwe as the host of the ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifier global tournament in November this year.

The hosts are looking at putting Thailand in their place before the tournament as the Asians are part of the 10-team tournament.

The Lady Chevrons are confident after seeing off the visitors by seven wickets with 30 balls remaining in the first of the four unofficial One Dayers at the same venue on Wednesday.

Unbeaten half-centuries from skipper Mary-Anne Musonda (50) and all-rounder Josephine Nkomo (57) helped Zimbabwe to an emphatic victory.

Musonda opted to field after winning the toss as she made her comeback from a knee injury that ruled her out of the home tie against South Africa Emerging Women.

Thailand were restricted to 199/4 in their allotted overs before the hosts made light work of the total reaching 200/3 in 45 overs.

Zimbabwe women’s team head coach Adam Chifo credited the team for an all-around display and singled out Musonda and Nkomo for praise.

“On the overall, it was a good performance all round with the bat and ball,” Chifo told Entersportnews.

“Am happy with the way we expressed ourselves on the field with special mention to Josy and Mary. Lots of positives to take forward as well as areas we need to improve on as we find a rhythm as a team.”

Zimbabwe had to negotiate close to an entire innings of spin on Wednesday and could face a similar script tomorrow.

“Yes, we are expecting to face more overs of spin when we bat, and we believe we have enough options to negotiate our innings through and put up a good total,” he said.
