Zim Inmates Advance to Second Round of 4th Intercontinental Online Chess Championship for Prisoners

Zimbabwean inmates chess team has had an impressive start in the 4th Intercontinental Online Chess Championship for Prisoners 2024, progressing to the second round after a spirited performance in Group 7.

The team, sponsored by Minerva Risk Advisors and supported by the Zimbabwe Chess Federation, exhibited a profound understanding of the game of chess in overcoming their opponents.

In the group stage, Zimbabwe’s incarcerated chess stars whitewashed Switzerland, Portugal, Kenya, England, and Iceland, proving their strength on the chess board.

Despite losses to top-finishers Serbia and fourth-placed Greece, the team’s five wins out of seven matches were sufficient to secure a second-place finish in Group 7 and a spot in the next stage.

The tournament played online with a time limit of 10 minutes + 5 seconds per move, presented a unique challenge for the Zimbabwean team.

However, their extensive preparation and experience in online chess competitions appeared to have paid off as they navigated the group stage relatively easily.

The team’s success can be attributed to their exceptional teamwork and individual skill. Each player brought their unique strengths to the board to create a formidable force that opponents struggled to contain.

As the tournament enters its next phase, the Zimbabwean team will face stiffer competition, but their confidence and momentum should serve them well.

With the backing of their sponsors and facilitators, the team is poised to make a deep run in the championship and bring pride to the nation.

The 4th Intercontinental Online Chess Championship for Prisoners 2024 concludes on October 11.
