Zambia lead the pack ahead of 2023 Minerva International Open Chess Tournament

The competitive circuit in African Chess is set to surge into high gear, with the Zambian players leading the pack as favourites in the upcoming 2023 Minerva International Open Chess Tournament.

This prestigious event, set in the vibrant atmosphere of Joina City in Harare, runs from May 25 to May 28 and promises a spectacle of high-octane chess games.

The top-rated player roster sees a strong Zambian presence with IM Gillan Bwayla, FM Douglas Munenga, and FM Lungu Nase. Zimbabwe’s own FM Jemusse Zhemba, who carries the home turf advantage, is not to be overlooked. Banele Mhango, from South Africa, is also poised to make waves in the tournament. The experienced chess maestro from Malawi, FM Joseph Mwale, adds further depth to the competition.

Meanwhile, Emarald Mushore and FM Roy Mwadzura represent Zimbabwe’s best hopes, adding further intrigue to this continental clash. Noticeably missing from the starting list are Spencer Masango and IM Rodwell Makoto, both prominent figures in African chess, whose absence will undoubtedly be felt.

The grand prize for the Men’s section is a generous USD 1,300, accompanied by a coveted trophy and a gold medal. Not to be overlooked, the runner-up and third-place finisher will receive prizes of USD 700 and USD 500, respectively, accompanied by silver and bronze medals.

In the Women’s section, the competition is equally fierce. WCM Kudzanayi Charinda of Zimbabwe, Anzel Laubscher from South Africa, and Linda Shaba will go head-to-head against Botswana’s WGM Tuduetso Sabure, a formidable competitor.

In the women’s competition, the top honour includes a USD 1,000 prize, a trophy, and a gold medal. In addition, the second and third-place finishers will receive USD 500 and USD 400, respectively, along with silver and bronze medals.

The 2023 Minerva International Open Chess Tournament, sponsored by Minerva Risk Advisors for the third consecutive year, is all set to showcase the best of African chess, promoting the region’s growth and development.

As the event draws nearer, tension and anticipation are increasing. Four days of intense competition are expected to produce new champions and unforgettable games, marking yet another milestone in the history of African chess.
