Support Unit Women Topple Fierce Rivals UZ Wolves in Thrilling Final
SUPPORT Unit Women completed a remarkable turnaround to successfully defend their Harare Premier Volleyball League crown after edging UZ Wolves 3-2 in the women’s final in Chikurubi on Sunday.
The Eagles in June stood in position three on the log table with 14 points behind UZ Wolves in second place with 17 and log leaders Harare City with 20.
However, the defending champions turned on the heat in the four-team Championship round, winning all their matches, accounting for IZ Wolves and Harare City 3-2.
This was the turning point of their 2023 campaign, according to their Head Coach, Raphael Hotera.
“If you look at the previous games, we used to give UZ Wolves too much respect. Each match we played against them, we coined ourselves underdogs and instead of getting in to fight, it was more like we were in to fulfil the fixtures,” Hotera told EnterSportNews.
“After those 3-2 wins against Harare City and UZ, our girls started believing in themselves, their game improved, and that helped us motivate them for the bigger occasions like this final.”
Hotera added that they managed to neutralize UZ Wolves threat during the final.
” UZ are very strong on their service as well as on attack, so we manage to return their service so well, and we were solid with our blocking,” he said.
The Women’s top four remained unchanged from last season, with UZ Wolves, Harare City and Manyame Falcons completing their respect second to fourth placements.
