School adopts “VAR” technology

… as Makumbi Legends whip schoolboys

LAST weekend the country sampled its first Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology during the Visitation Makumbi reunion match in Domboshava, Mashonaland East.

The match pitting the former students against the current school’s first team attracted large crowds that can make the Premier Soccer League hierarchy green with envy, thanks to leading fan engagement experts, Oracle Sport justifying why they are Zimbabwe Cricket’s official fan engagement partner.

With scores tied nil, all going to the breather, match referee Maxwell Maocha awarded the schoolboys a penalty.

However, with the availability of VAR technology under the auspices of the school’s former Deputy Headmaster, Sylvester Mugamu, technology was called into play.

Video replays showed that the ball was nowhere near the hands encouraging the referee to withdraw his earlier penalty decision and an investment worth taking by the former head to sample his technology during the much-hyped derby.

But it was only a matter of time before the school team collapsed as they failed to keep up the endurance with the old boys. This is undoubtedly the reason that has given the premiership side’s frontman, Innocent Benza, to flourish at 51 years.

The Legends overpowered the students 5-2 at full time with a hattrick from Kudzai “Spiceboy” Manhanhanha, a screamer from Godfrey “Yellow” Lobo and a tap-in by Hope Kudzerema. The schoolboys got their goals from Dennis Mademutsa and Munashe Meki.

The reunion was well sponsored by former students, chief among them chartered accountant Lewis Madafi and wife (Wisrod Investments), Pauline Zvinowanda (Madhadha Liquor Supplies), Callista Sambaza (Sweat Field), Noel Chituriro (TNTT Communications), Sally Handitye,
Hilton Harunavamwe (Flint Automobile), Kudzai Kaviya and the Legends.
