Musonda in the running for top ICC gong

ON-SONG Zimbabwe Women cricket captain Mary-Anne Musonda is in the running for the ICC top achievers award for the month of October, with fans registered on icc-cricket.com/awards eligible to vote for the country’s skipper.

The 30-year-old top-order batter and useful spinner etched her name in the history books with an unbeaten 100 on Zimbabwe’s One Day International debut against Ireland at Harare Sports Club, culminating in the locals’ famous four-wicket victory last month.

In her innings, she managed to score 169 runs. She is up against the Irish Women pair of Laura Delany and Gaby Lewis, who scored a couple of half-centuries against Zimbabwe. Delany amassed a total of 189 runs and claimed four wickets, while Lewis was the series’ leading run-getter with 263 runs.

Musonda becomes only the first Zimbabwe Women cricketer to be shortlisted for this prestigious recognition and only the second local player, both men and women combined after Test captain Sean Williams. He was nominated for the ICC Men’s Player of the Month Award.

Williams was nominated together with India’s Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Rashid Khan of Afghanistan, with the award going to India. This month’s nominations for the Men’s player for October are Shakib Al Hasan, the Bangladesh all-rounder, Asif Ali of Pakistan and Namibia’s David Weise.
