Mapuranga Wins TCFL Chess Open

VITALIS Mapuranga emerged as the winner of the TCFL Open tournament over the weekend in Harare.

The TelOne Centre for Learning Chess Club organized the event in partnership with Mhondoro Chess, which was officiated by IA Simbarashe Murimi.

At least 46 players competed in the seven-round event.

Mapuranga finished the tournament undefeated and shared the spoils with Tinashe Chinhanga and Terrence Mureya. Mapuranga solidified his first position with 6 points.

Chinhanga secured six points, an impressive feat, but fell short on Buchholz and had to settle for second place.

Mureya, Collen Chikwature, and Shingirai Chiweshe finished with 5.5 points each, resulting in a joint third-place finish in the chess tourney.

In the TCFL U16 category, Prosper Matyira showed exceptional skill and won with a flawless performance, earning a perfect score. Livingson Revengo, Unashe Tenesi, and Bright Mufambi shared the second position, each getting 5 points, which displays the depth of talent among the younger participants.

The competition was intense in the U12 section, with Gift Tenesi taking the first position with 6.5 points. Nokutenda Magodyo was a close second with 6 points, while Darksh Agarwal claimed third place with 5.5 points. It was an impressive display of talent by these young chess prodigies.

Grace Zvarembwa received the highly coveted “Best Lady” award for her outstanding performance in the Open section.

Fortune Gandawa, one of the organisers from Mhondoro Chess, expressed his satisfaction with the seamless execution of the tournament.

 “We are delighted that the tournament ran smoothly with all three sections going as planned,” Gandawa added.

“Following this resounding success, we are eager to organise more events to promote and nurture chess talent in our community.”
