M’afriq Resurfaces on the Musical Scene
FAMED urban grooves outfit, M’afriq has resurfaced on the musical scene at least ten years after they separated ways in pursuit of solo careers.
The Ndichamuudza Chete hitmakers will yesterday (Friday) at Tristan’s – The Half Bar stage a show dubbed ‘Reunion’.
Speaking to EnterSportNews, band member Tunga T emphasised that the show marks the beginning of a new season for the group.
“We have a better vision and focus than before. Right now, we just want to re-introduce ourselves and take it from there,” he said.
“However, there is more, but I cannot disclose all right now. Fans should expect more timeless tunes as before because M’afriq is here to stay.”
The trio of Pauline Gundidza, Tungamirai ‘Tunga T’ Mavi and Lovedale ‘Discord’ Makalanga formed M’afriq in 2003. The group has two albums, namely, Chizevezeve- 2006 and Shungu Dzemwoyo- 2009.
The group parted ways in 2010 to embark on individual projects and reunited in 2020 to work on an album. However, the Covid-19 pandemic did little favour the group as it thwarted their comeback efforts.
“We are indeed reunited, but because of the Covid-19 restrictions and lockdowns, all our plans were derailed,” added Tunga T.
“The major setback was the pandemic. We did a few shows and recorded a couple of singles. We even have a video project that was shot halfway, then the first lockdown descended upon us and pulled us back.”
During the 10-year sabbatical, Tunga T has grown his designer brand and is also very active on the gospel scene. He has a new single airing on local radio stations, “Gomo ibvapo”, derived from the bible teaching that faith can move mountains.
Fellow group member Pauline has a band of her own and has been performing shows whilst Discord is running the Mafriq Music Factory (MMF) studio project. He has also been performing as a solo guitarist at many private functions.
