COURTNEY Lock brought Zimbabwe back on track of staying in the Davis World Group II after beating Uruguay’s Ignacio Carou 6-3 to level the match 1-1 before rain brought play to an abrupt end at Harare Sports Club on Saturday.
After getting a good night’s sleep, Courtney knew what needed to be done to keep Zimbabwe’s hopes of staying up alive, and he duly responded.
The Zimbabwe second seed played near-flawless tennis by first holding serve and took a 4-3 lead.
He then broke Carou in the next game, giving himself a chance to serve for the set.
Courtney never gave Carou a chance to stay in the set as his confidence grew and closed the set to set up a thrilling deciding set.
Zimbabwe’s lack of investment in sports infrastructure came to the fore as the Group II match had to be abandoned for the second day because of rain.
In the past, most Davis Cup matches used to be played under the roof of the multipurpose City Sports Centre, which is now in an awful state.
The match resumes tomorrow at one game apiece, Carou serving at 30-0.
