Lady Citizens’ Winning Streak Continues
HARARE City Women’s Volleyball team’s fine run continued with a 3-0 demolition of foes UZ Wolves Women in a Championship round match played at the University of Zimbabwe courts on Sunday.
The Lady Citizens ran riot in the first set, giving the Wolves no time to breathe to emerge 25-13 victors.
UZ Wolves came better a better side in the second set, but Harare City still maintained their hegemony, winning the set 25-18 to go 2-0 up.
The third set was almost a replica of the second as Harare City walloped their nemesis 25-20 to claim the match 3-0.
In another Championship round match, Support Unit dismissed Manyame Falcons by a similar margin, 3-0, in court 3.
Support Unit won 25-16, 25-14 and 25-18, ending their day’s play on a high. Jewels beat Pythons 3-1 in the Women’s Consolation matches, while Black Mambas thumped AFC 3-0.
In the men’s category, Harare City Men continued to sing the blues losing on identical 3-0 scorelines against Black Rhinos and NABA in their Championship round matches. The highly entertaining game against Black Rhinos saw the Citizens falling marginally 25-22 in the first set. Harare City were close to claiming the second set but lost 31-29 before again failing to break Rhinos in the third set, where they lost 27-25.
Harare City perhaps exhausted their energy against Black Rhinos as they were a pale shadow of themselves against NABA. They were beaten 25-17, 25-23 and 25-17 in straight sets.
UZ Wolves Men also had a forgettable afternoon as they lost 3-0 against Black Rhinos and 3-2 versus Support Unit.
The Harare Premier Volleyball League returned this weekend after a month-long midseason break.
“The return marks the start of Round two of the league Grand Prix format, which is the Championship bracket,” Harare Volleyball Premier League Chairman Priestledge Nhamburo told EnterSportNews.
“In the first round, each team play each other (round robin), earning points. In the second round – the top teams, for example, men six and women five, enter a championship bracket, and the remaining go into consolation (placement matches).
“Those in Championship will then play aiming to reach semi-finals and final matches to be crowned champions.”
