Junior Sables Indiscipline Overshadows Spirited Comeback

Scotland scored five unanswered tries in the first half and three successful conversions to lead the Junior Sables 31-0 at halftime.

Zimbabwe started brightly in the first minutes and even threatened to score an early try, but Scotland turned their defence into attack and scored the first try of the match in the third minute through Ben Afshar.

Two minutes later, the young Scots showed their physical ability by using a heavy driving maul and their hooker Jerry Blyth-Lafferty dotted the ball over the line for their second try of the match.

The Junior Sables’ defence was once again caught in sixes and sevens in the 16th minute when Scotland winger Geordie Gwynn chipped over Zimbabwe’s defence, jumped over, and caught the ball over the try line for Scotland’s third.

Scotland forwards continued to bully Zimbabwe, especially on the breakdown forcing the young Sables to play a physical game instead of their running rugby.

Zimbabwe were dealt a heavy blow when their captain Panashe Zuze was injured and had to be substituted.

Things went from bad to worse for the team from the southern hemisphere when hooker Bryan Chiang was yellow-carded for infringing on the breakdown despite numerous warnings from the referee.

Zimbabwe continued on their indisciplined path, and Shingi Manyarara followed Chiang to the sin bin for a lifting tackle that landed a Scotland player on his back.

With the Junior Sables two men down, Gwynn scored his hat trick of tries on the stroke of halftime for Scotland to lead 31-0.

After the break, Scotland scored three more tries to take their score to 50-0.

Chiang, Zimbabwe’s hooker, atoned for his sins after returning from the sin bin as he powered over the line for his team’s first try of the match in the 53rd minute.

The Zimbabwe fightback began with that try.

In the 60th minute, Shadreck Mandaza was given a yellow card, the third one of the match for Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe scored their second try in the 65-minute through 14-man Edward Sigauke after some slick passing in the midfield.

And almost from the restart, Leo Mutendi scored Zimbabwe’s third before Tawanda Matipano ran the length of the field after again some slick backline play by the locals to score their fourth try. They were taking the score to 50-26.

Scotland hit back with an intercepted try to break Zimbabwe’s scoring streak, to take the score to 57-26.

Mandaza forced Scotland into making a mistake and scored Zimbabwe’s fifth try of the match before Scotland scored a try of their own. The match ended 64-33.
