HARDLY two weeks after the death of Bulelwa Mkutukana, known by her stage name Zahara, South Africa’s music fraternity was again plunged into mourning following the death of Joyous Celebration member Eric Moyo, who collapsed in Port Elizabeth whilst performing.
According to reports from South Africa, the Zimbabwean gospel artist collapsed during a performance after suffering from a stroke and later died at a local hospital.
Before his trek down south, Moyo was first discovered during the CBZ A-Academy Talent Show, which was featured on ZBC-TV in 2006, and he finished in the top three.
After conquering the local scene, Moyo then conquered Africa in 2007 when he won the inaugural edition of Idols East Africa, beating Nicolette Kiiga of Kenya for the top prize.
The late 41-year-old was signed by Sony BMG and walked away $ 80,000 richer for winning Idols East Africa, which opened doors for him in South Africa at Joyous Celebration.
Bulawayo-born Moyo was the fourth Zimbabwean to join the award-winning gospel ensemble Joyous Celebration, following in the footsteps of Takesure Zamar Ncube, Mkhululi Bhebhe and lead guitarist Frank Mavhimira.
Ironically, 2018 Joyous Celebration founder Lindelani Mkhize spent three nights in a Durban hospital after he suffered a heart attack.
Due to fatigue and the altering of their sleeping patterns, musicians and footballers have been dying from heart complications.
Non-communicable diseases like sugar, diabetes, and high blood pressure are proving to be the biggest silent killer, and more campaigns need to be made.
