Football gets reprieve

DOMESTIC football got a green light from the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) to finish off the Chibuku Super Cup games and national team training camp in preparation for their participation in the COSAFA Cup in July 2021.

Football is one of the nine sport
codes granted an exemption to resume specific activities to fulfil critical international and domestic tournaments.

However, it is the return of Zimbabwe’s most-followed sport, football, that will cheer the general populace in these trying times.

Due to the ban on spectators from attending matches, games that have been live-streamed online have attracted an average of 40 thousand views per match.

Football only returned last month after almost an 18-month hiatus. Still, it was stopped abruptly after the SRC directed all sporting activities to stop in compliance with a government directive for mass gatherings to stop after a surge in Covid-19 cases in the country.

In a statement, SRC warned sports associations not to carry out any sporting activities other than what has been granted.

“For the avoidance of doubt, no rugby, football or any other sporting activities are to resume other than for those purposes specifically exempted as was granted, ” said SRC in a statement.

Shooting, swimming, golf, bass, athletics, rugby, cricket, volleyball and football were all given exemption with specific tournaments.
