FORMER Dynamos player and coach David “Yogi” Mandigora passed away today at his home in Harare.
He was 64.
In 2017 the DeMbare Legend had one of his legs amputated for what was suspected to be a cancerous infection.
Twenty-four hours before his death, he had gone to see a specialist doctor at a local medical centre as he was in pain. Mandigora faced the possibility of losing another leg due to another amputation on his remaining leg after experiencing excruciating pain.
While the nation is still trying to come to grips with the demise of the 1980 Soccer Star of the Year, football lovers took to Twitter to convey their condolences to the Mandigora family, friends, and football fraternity.
The Herald Senior Sports Editor, Robson Sharuko described Mandigora as a humble guy and one of Zimbabwe’s greatest.
Football is part of the entertainment industry, and one fan thanked Yogi for providing the fans with something to cheer about during the hyper-inflationary environment of 2008. In that year, Mandigora led Dynamos to the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League.
The former Dynamos coach who spent two years in Mozambique as coach of Costa del Sol was also admired and respected by fans of bitter rivals, CAPS United.
Tatenda Gondo, a sports journalist, was lost for words.
Former Minister of Local Government Saviour Kasukuwere, living in exile, spoke about the brave fight Mandigora fought, but God had the final say.
