MIKAYLA Colegrave bagged a bronze medal after coming home in third position in the Junior U19 ladies event at the 2021 Africa Triathlon Cup Sharm El Sheikh event in Egypt today.
The Zimbabwe junior ladies champion recovered from an indifferent swim as she caught up with her counterparts on the bike and maintained her position until the finish. Triathlon Zimbabwe head coach Pam Fulton was satisfied with Colegrave’s performance.
“Her swim has a weakness, so she knew that she wouldn’t be near the front in the swim, but her focus was there. Once she got on to the bike, she just put her head down and worked hard as she could and brought on as many athletes as she could,” Fulton told EnterSportNews from Egypt.
” She was out of the swim towards the back of the pack, and she pulled away to be third off the bike, which is fantastic…really solid, steady bike for her, so she just maintained that position on the run a good solid run as well.”
Fulton added that the podium finish puts Colegrave in good stead heading into another championship at the same venue next weekend.
“Unfortunately, Mikayla is going off to the UK for university, so it is very unlikely that she would be here for Troutbeck (September Troutbeck Africa Cup), but this race today has given her huge confidence, and she will be racing again next week weekend in a championship event so I’m looking forward to seeing what event it’s gonna be like next weekend with so much confidence,” added Fulton.
Meanwhile, another Zimbabwean elite athlete Matthew Denslow braved ill health to complete his race in the Elite U23 men, subsequently failing to make it for a podium finish.
