Caps Legend Joe Mugabe Dies

LEGENDARY Caps United midfielder Joe Mugabe passed on in Reading, England, this morning.

He was 52.

Mugabe lost his battle with cancer a few weeks after the club lost another legend in Steve Kwashi, who ironically was the coach when Mugabe won his solitary league title in 1996.

Kode from Mabvuku as he was affectionately known by the legion of CAPS United fans, made his debut for the Green Machine in 1988. During his time at CAPS, he won domestic trophies, which earned the club the moniker ‘Cup Kings’

But it was winning the league title in 1996 in which his leadership skills were called upon, eventually sealing his legendary status among the CAPS United faithfuls.

The 1996 team had Silver Chigwenje, Stewart Murisa, Alois Bunjira, Charles Johane, Lloyd Chitembwe and Mpumelelo Dzowa, among others.

Mugabe rivalry in midfield against former Dynamos captain Memory Mucherahowa earned both players respect from the two opposing camps. Those duels are still spoken about to this day by those who were privileged to watch the famous Harare Derby.

Kode’s burial arrangement will be announced in due course.
