Bennett makes Olympics history

SARAH Bennett today became the first Zimbabwean to officiate in a hockey gold medal match at the Olympics.

The history-making Bennett officiated in the men’s hockey final as a time judge. Belgium beat Australia 3-2 to clinch gold at the ongoing Tokyo Olympics 2020.

The sport of hockey has long been associated with Zimbabwe sporting fairy tales at the global stage after Zimbabwe won gold at the Moscow Olympics in 1980.

The gold medal by the Women’s hockey team remains the only medal won by a Zimbabwe team sport.

At the age of 37, Bennett is the youngest hockey technical official at this year’s summer Olympics.

It is not only athletes that dream of taking part in the Olympics but officials too.

Bennett has traversed the length and breadth of the continent and beyond, officiating in hockey tournaments. Being part of the hockey technical officials at the Olympics is only the beginning of the young respected hockey umpire.
