THE much-awaited All Stars Cricket Academy Tournament kicked off at a blistering pace at Prince Edward School in Harare on Saturday, with teams sizing each other for the coveted trophy in three different age groups.
The event, sponsored by Plascon, includes three highly competitive categories: U14, U15, and U19.
In the highly competitive U19 division, four teams, All Stars Cricket Academy, St Aidens, Goromonzi Sharks, and Young Legends, are vying for the top spot.
St. Aidens has taken the lead in the early stages of the competition. They gained the lead after a thrilling match against All Stars, winning by a margin of 20 runs in the most exciting match of the day.
All Stars are currently in second place, with Young Legends following closely behind. At the bottom of the table are the Goromonzi Sharks.
The competition for top individual honours is quite intense. Malachi Harry from All Stars has taken the lead as the highest run-scorer in the U19 category, scoring an impressive total of 106 runs after two innings. Newman Nyamhuri, Zimbabwe U19 representative at this year’s World Cup in South Africa of St Aidens and Panashe Zai of Young Legends are close behind, scoring 69 runs each.
Tinashe Mushope of St Aidens and Tafadzwa Piti of Young Legends have shown their skills in the bowling department, claiming an impressive five wickets in two innings. Mutsa Nkomo of All Stars is following closely behind with four wickets to his credit.
According to Lyndon Nkomo, the chairman of All Stars Cricket Academy, explosive action is expected in the U19 category for the tournament
“Our prime event will be the U19 final. These are the big boys. We are expecting fireworks.
Zimbabwe U19 recently competed in the World Cup. These are the boys that should also be representing Zimbabwe. We expect them to spread the fire and light on Saturday.
That’s when we expect the tournament to happen. We are expecting fireworks on that day. The highlights will definitely be the U19s,” Nkomo assured.
In the U15 category, Glen View Development and All Stars have shown their early dominance by surging to the top of the standings. Meanwhile, SM Sports Academy and Kadoma Cricket Academy compete for positions and currently hold the third and fourth spots, respectively.
Four teams – All Stars, Young Legends, ECA Harare, and Glen View Development – are competing to be the top team in the U14 division.
As the tournament continues, expect exciting matches and great performances from young cricketers who want to make a name for themselves.
