Japanese Ambassador Cup Judo Championship Kicks Off in Harare

The 2023 Japanese Ambassador Cup Judo Championship will take place on Saturday at the Hellenic School in Harare.

This ranking tournament awards points to players. These points determine the selection of national team players for regional and international competitions.

The 2022 Ambassador Cup was dominated by Zambian Judokas, who brought their A-game.

There is a strong group from Tongogara Refugee Camp, which is now home to over 100 judokas, just like last year.

Judo Association of Zimbabwe’s Secretary General, Patrick Zindoga, expressed gratitude to the Japanese Embassy tournament sponsors for their continuous support in developing Judo.

“The Japanese embassy has been one of our greatest supporters for our association. They are working to help our association get funding to build a Judo dojo for our association and have also been helping the association get kit for practising Judo in our up-and-coming clubs in areas like Mabvuku, Epworth, Murewa and many other areas,” said Zindoga.

The Judo SG has urged fans to come in their numbers to come and witness some new exciting talent in action.

“We have a number of new judokas that are doing amazingly well and look forward to seeing them participate in this much bigger competition”, added Zindoga.

Judo is thriving in Zimbabwe under Smart Deke’s leadership, as he promotes the sport in unconventional locations and schools.
