KENYA women’s national volleyball team and hosts Cameroon start as favourites in the 2023 Women’s Africa Nations Volleyball Championship crown that serves off today, Wednesday, at 11 am in Cameroon.
The week-long event is being held at the Yaounde Multi-purpose Hall.
Kenya, the nine-time African champions, fresh from two training camps, one in Morocco and the other in France.
Defending Champions Cameroon Lionesses have had a three-month training camp in Cameroon, Slovenia, and Croatia.
In the last edition held in Kigali, Rwanda, in 2021, Cameroon defeated Kenya 3-1 to continue their dominance of the East African nation. Kenya has lost the final to Cameroon thrice in a row (2017, 2019, and 2021).
Africa’s prestigious tournament features 12 teams that are part of Africa pooled in two groups.
Group A comprise hosts Cameroon, Nigeria, Burundi, Mali, Algeria and Egypt
while Group B is made up of Kenya, Morocco, Rwanda, Uganda, Burkina Faso, and Lesotho.
The African Women’s Volleyball Championship is a sports competition for national teams, currently held biannually and organised by the African Volleyball Confederation, the African volleyball federation.
The tournament’s top two teams will qualify for the 2022 FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship as the CAVB representatives.
They also serve as a crucial qualification platform for next year’s Olympic Games in Paris, as there are points for the picking.
