From Zimdancehall to Gospel Sensation: Prince Chigwida’s Journey to Music Stardom
Fast-rising contemporary gospel musician Prince Chigwida is currently the talk of the town as his songs are rocking the social contemporary music scene.
His exceptional singing style has earned him many ears and awarded him, numerous followers, increasing in numbers each day.
But who is Prince Chigwida?
Born Principal Chigwida in Chegutu, Mashonaland West Province, 28 years ago, he attended Cam and Motor Primary and Chemukute High School in Kadoma.
Chigwida is the third born in a family of five and is single.
In an interview, he reviewed that he started as a Zimdancehall artist and was involved in popular riddims like bodyslam with the song Ndozvinoita Rudo and Mwanasikana on Zimbo flavour riddim of Chill Spot records.
“I started to develop an interest in music in high school and started to record in 2015 as a Zimdancehall artist.”
“I was inspired by the late Souljah Love’s music which was narrating his and people’s life experiences,” he said.
Later on, Chigwida joined Zion Christian Church (ZCC Mbungo) of Mutendi in Masvingo and started falling in love with the ZCC gospel music and its vibe, and that is when he turned to be a traditional mbira gospel musician inspired by Jah Prayzah and the late Chiwoniso Maraire.
“I recorded my first album in 2018 titled Dziva Rokupona with eight tracks including songs recorded with traditional drums (ngoma).”
“The album was recorded by Mambo Hermas, the producer behind Obert Chari’s hit song Mebo,” he said.
In 2019, Chigwida relocated to South Africa in search of greener pastures.
“l was later employed as a technician at Digital Link SA. l raised capital to record my second album titled Zion Nditakure that brought me to fame at church level as many people loved my music,” he said.
“I realised that I had talent when l heard one of my songs, Zion Nditakure, being remixed by one of the renowned artists in the country – Maskiri, and it moved me to start working hard to make sure that my music reaches and inspires everyone even outside the church, ” he emphasised.
Chigwida has four albums and four singles, with the current one Simudza Kutenda featuring the current hit song Ndireverere Ndipone.
“Through the love and support from fans, l kept on composing and recording songs and released my third album in 2020 titled Gore Rino Ndezveduwo, which features Trymore Bande.”
“I have also worked with TC music productions, Trombil Studios and Mambo Hermas on my new album,” he added.
Chigwida, who leads the Perfect Generation band, was endorsed by Baba Harare, whom he recently shared a stage with in Bulawayo, where he thrilled fans with the song Ndireverere Ndipone which left the fans in a frenzy.
“l want to thank the fans for all the support. l will continue to release more music that teaches and inspires the young generation, strengthening our Christianity and our culture,” he said.
Chigwida has won people’s hearts with his songs, as many have created short videos imitating him on Facebook and Tik Tok.
He went on to elaborate that one day he intends to represent the country internationally.
“Given an opportunity, I would love to work with Jah Praizah, Feli Nnandi and Killer T so that l rise to fame,” he said.
The gospel singer believes collaborating with top musicians in the country will be a strategy towards achieving his dreams.
