THE city of Harare is set to resonate with the symphony of cerebral combat as the 2023 Harare Professional Chess League returns to action at The Harare Club in the capital on Saturday following a week-long break.

Battle lines are drawn in this 12-team league as it approaches round eight of the 22 round-robin league fixtures. The matches promise a potent blend of drama and finesse, especially as the players, still revelling in their recent successes at the Minerva International Chess Open, are raring to go.

The Game of the Week is the blockbuster showdown between the second-placed Chitown Masters Chess Club and current log leaders, Harare City Chess Club. Both teams, locked in an intense struggle at the top, have amassed 11 points each after six rounds. They meet for the first time this season, bearing an impressive record of five wins and a draw each. The stakes are high as these chess titans meet on the board, with every move a potential game-changer.

Chitown Masters Chess Club, the challenger to the throne, carries a formidable arsenal led by Shingirayi Chiweshe, Tanaka Katsande, Archfold Matiringe, and Delight Kagogoda. These players are not only experts in the game but also master strategists, anticipating to bring their best to keep their team in the running.

The defending log leaders, Harare City Chess Club, counters with a roster that is nothing short of remarkable. Easter Open Champion Emarald Mushore leads the team and boasts of rising talent in Vitalis Mapuranga and seasoned veteran Elisha Chimbamu. Additionally, their Women Candidate Masters, Kudzanayi Charinda and Refiloe Mudodo, joint champions of the recent Minerva International, add a fearsome dimension to their lineup.

At the other end of the spectrum, the CBZ Chess Club, yet to score a point, seeks redemption against the Knights Chess Academy Zim. The Knights, led by John Chibvuri SNR, occupy a solid sixth position with seven points. Can the underdogs bite back? The drama unfolds this weekend.

The eighth-placed Belvedere Freepiece Chess Club is set to take on the 11th-placed Nyaradzo Chess Club. The fifth-placed Asante Chess Club squares off against the third-placed Waterfalls Chess Club in what promises to be a tactical spectacle.

In the ninth position, Minerva Chess Club will battle against number 10, ZBFH Chess Club, each vying for the precious points to climb up the rankings. Not to be outdone, the fourth-placed Old Mutual Chess Club will take on the seventh-placed Immortals Chess Club. All eyes will be on Spencer Masango, returning to action, as he looks to aid the Immortals’ climb up the ladder.
