BREAKING: FIFA Congress confirms ZIFA suspension

THE FIFA Congress has confirmed the suspension of the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) from international football.

This followed the suspension of ZIFA by the FIFA Council pending a decision by the FIFA Congress over government interference. The Sports and Recreational Commission, led by its Chairman Gerald Mlothswa suspended the Felton Kamambo governed ZIFA board over trumped-up charges and sexual harassment allegations.

FIFA, however, thrashed SRC’s heavy-handedness and directed them to reinstate the suspended ZIFA board or risk punitive measures. Still, the SRC did not give in, culminating in the suspension earlier today.

At least 199 members voted in favour of the suspension, while only one member voted against it during the 72nd FIFA Congress held today’s Doha Exhibition and Convention Centre.

The Magistrates Court denied Kamambo and his deputy Philemon Machana their passports as they sought to travel to Doha to attend the FIFA Congress.
