TOP order batter Sharne Mayers has been drafted into the Zimbabwe Senior Women’s Cricket Team for the three-match One Day International Series against Bangladesh Women next week.
The games are scheduled for Bulawayo’s Queens Sports on November 10, 12 and 15.
These are the Lady Chevrons’ last competitive form of preparations ahead of the 10-team ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifiers scheduled for Harare later this month.
Mayers, an experienced opener, last played for the Lady Chevrons at the triumphant Africa Women’s Qualifiers hosted by Zimbabwe in May 2019.
She was the tournament’s leading run-scorer with 216 runs in five innings. Wicketkeeper batter Modester Mupachikwa was third with 125 runs, Chipo Mugeri-Tiripano fifth with 119 runs was leggy Anesu Mushangwe was the leading wicket-taker with ten wickets in five matches.
After that, she was selected to be part of the ICC Global Development side with her captain Mary-Anne Musonda, all-rounder Mushangwe and spinner, Tasmeen Granger. Lady Chevrons head coach Adam Chifo was meant to coach the side.
However, the Zimbabwean contingent were barred from travelling to the UK after the ICC sanctioned and suspended Zimbabwe Cricket over the government’s interference.
“Sharne Mayers will now be joining the team from South Africa. Unfortunately, Anesu could not secure travelling papers and therefore won’t be joining us,” Chifo told EnterSportNews.
“Sharne is an experienced veteran, so obviously, that’s a boost for not only our batting line up but in the change room also.”
