PETER Wetzlar’s personal best time was not good enough as he finished fifth in heat four of men’s 100 meters freestyle to crash out the Tokyo Olympics.
Like Donato Katai on Sunday, Wetzlar managed to better his previous best time of 50.50 as he came home in 50.31 seconds, but that was not enough for a semifinal berth.
The top 16 fastest swimmers from various heats qualified for the semifinals.
The Tokyo experience has shown Zimbabwean swimmers that with the proper exposure and pressure cooker swimming tournaments against the best, they will be pushed to perform their best as they did at the Olympics.
With both swimmers and rowers Peter Purcell Gilpin out of medal reckoning at the ongoing Olympics, only sprinter Ngoni Makusha and Scott Vincent, the golfer, hold the slim hopes of Zimbabwe winning a medal.
