Williams Fall Short On ICC Award For March

ZIMBABWE Test cricket captain Sean Williams missed out on the International Cricket Council (ICC) player of the month award for March that was awarded to Indian swing bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar yesterday.

Kumar won the ICC Men’s Player of the Month for March 2021, following his impressive performances in India’s recently concluded series against England.

The right arm seamer was the standout bowler on either side in the white-ball series and was chosen the winner for the month by fans and the ICC voting academy.

The ICC yesterday announced the winners of the ICC Player of the Month Awards for March which recognise and celebrate the best performances from both male and female cricketers across all forms of international cricket throughout the year.

Williams was shortlisted for the award alongside Rashid Khan of Afghanistan and Bhuvneshwar the eventual winner.

The Zimbabwe left-hander got the nomination on the back of a strong performance in the two-match Test series against Afghanistan played in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates where he scored a total of 264 runs, including two centuries and took two wickets.

Williams made 105 in the first match which Zimbabwe won by 10 wickets inside two days.

In the second Test, Williams scored an unbeaten 151, although Zimbabwe lost by six wickets and was named the man of the series.

His stellar performance with the bat saw Williams’ Test career batting average jump into the 40’s for the first time, making him the only current player with an average above 40.

The final vote is determined by the independent ICC Voting Academy and fans around the world.

The ICC Voting Academy which holds 90 percent of the vote, comprises prominent members of the cricket family including senior journalists, former players, and broadcasters.

Zimbabwe journalist and cricket commentator, Tristan Holme and Mpumelelo Mbangwa who are both based in South Africa are part of the ICC Voting Academy whilst the vote by the fans across the globe through the ICC website make up the final 10 percent share of the vote.
