Zimbabwe National Chess Team Prepares For Online Zonal Tournament
Zimbabwe national chess team gears up for online FIDE Southern Africa Zone 4.5 tournament
The online event will run from 16th -18th October. The national chess team will face the region’s toughest opponents, Angola, South Africa and Zambia.
The tournament will comprise of nine countries, playing a round-robin rapid games which will be ten minutes plus some increments in seconds making the whole game to be slightly more than twenty minutes.
Zimbabwe National men’s team will be led by Roy Mwadzura in the senior’s section. The senior ladies section is commanded by Woman Candidate Masters Kudzanayi Charinda and Christine Makwena.
Zimbabwe’s under 20 boys section is represented by Farai Hamandishe and Taurayi Muzhingi and under 20 ladies will rely on the strength of two female masters, WCM Rumbidzai Mawire and Woman Fide Master Refiloe Hazel Mudodo.
The competing teams will comprise of ten players, three open section players, three senior ladies, two under 20 boys and two under 20 girls. There are four reserves and the modalities of who will start to play in the senior player category will be dealt with by the organizers from team Zimbabwe.
The Chief Arbiter for the event will be International Arbiter (IA) Simbarashe Murimi of Zimbabwe who will be deputized by IA Chanda of Zambia.
Interesting games are expected as player exchange their mental prowess.
On paper, South Africa has one of the strongest teams in their senior men as they boast of the more experienced International Masters, Watu Kobese and Mabusela Johannes. Zambia will not go unnoticed so is Angola.
The tourney will feature a pulsating fight over the internet as the Southern region fight for honours to be inscribed in the African books as the maiden winners of this inaugural tournament of repute.
