2024 CABS Candidates Chess Tournament Set to Unearth New Talent

ZIMBABWE Chess Federation, in partnership with financial giant CABS, brings the 2024 CABS Candidates Chess Tournament to the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) in Bulawayo from December 5 to 8, 2024.

The event promises to be a chess extravaganza, featuring four categories: the Open Section, Ladies Section, U16 Prestige, and U16 Development Sections.

The U16 Prestige Section is the one to watch, as it’s FIDE-rated, while the U16 Development Section offers a chance for young players to experience the thrill of a high-stakes tournament without the pressure of performance.

The stakes are high, as the winners of the Candidates competition will earn a coveted spot on the National team, representing Zimbabwe at prestigious international tournaments.

The competition is expected to be fierce, with the national team hopefuls vying for a place at the top.

Last year’s tournament saw Chitown Masters Chess Club player Tanaka Katsande as the winner, with a strong finish that left Brian Dzvetera, Bismark Bhobhojani and Elvis Chaoma tied for second place.

Hazel Masongo took home the top prize in the Ladies Section.

This year’s event promises to attract more competitors, thanks to a generous sponsorship package from CABS. The Open Section winner will take home a prize of US$600, a trophy, and a gold medal, while the Ladies Section champion will receive US$500, a trophy, and a gold medal.

Todd Mapingire, President of the Zimbabwe Chess Federation, expressed his gratitude to CABS for their continued support.

“We’re incredibly thankful to CABS for their sponsorship, which makes all the difference. Their investment in our sport is having a profound impact on our young people, and we can’t wait to see the talent on display at this year’s tournament,” he said.
